When I came across this company, I wanted to understand how it worked before I got excited about the story. Here's what I found out.
The Problem Is Bigger Than Most People Realize
Every single day, contaminated stormwater, industrial coolant, and chemical runoff flows through our streams, rivers, and storm drains — and ends up in the ocean. It's not a distant problem. It's happening right now, in every city in America.
Cities and municipalities are facing escalating fines from state regulators and the EPA for failing to reduce toxic runoff. The city of Houston, Texas was recently cited and forced to pay $4.4 million in penalties — and invest an additional $2 billion in sewer infrastructure to avoid future violations. That's just one city.
The options available to municipalities have historically been terrible. Cover storm drains with plastic during heavy rain (which can itself violate EPA regulations), ignore the problem, or spend tens of millions building water treatment facilities that most cities simply can't afford. None of those are real solutions.

What EST CORE™ Actually Does
Years ago, inventor Benny Gurfinkel engineered a technology he called EST CORE™. Instead of using a conventional water filter, it uses a molecular bonding process — unique physical equipment combined with a precisely engineered medium — to trap debris, oil, hydrocarbons, and chemicals while allowing only clean water to pass through.

Three Proof Points That Got My Attention
I look at track records. Here are the three things that made me take EcoSave seriously:
Point 1 — Barnegat Bay, NJ. EcoSave's storm drain interceptors have been running continuously in Ocean Gate, New Jersey for 14 years, protecting Barnegat Bay from debris, oil, hydrocarbons, and chemical runoff. Point 2 — Deepwater Horizon. During the cleanup of one of the worst oil spills in history, EcoSave's First Response Vessel processed oil-contaminated water and returned it to the gulf at just 3.11 ppm oil — nearly 50 times cleaner than the EPA's legal limit of 150 ppm. Other cleanup vessels had to stop and return to shore to dispose of hazardous waste. EcoSave's vessel kept working. And the recovered oil was stored as a usable, sellable product — not hazardous waste. BP has since engaged EcoSave in conversations about future opportunities.
Point 3 — Industrial Coolant. Solar Turbines, a large manufacturer, used EST CORE™-powered Hydro-Clean units to recycle machining coolant. The technology kept the coolant cleaner for longer, dramatically reducing disposal costs. A typical machine shop with 60 machines could save over $500,000 a year by reusing cleaned coolant instead of constantly replacing it.
The Market Opportunity
There are three phases to EcoSave's business model, each addressing a massive and urgent market.
Phase 1 — Storm Drains & Interceptors. The State of California has mandated that all storm drains meet Full Trash Capture by December 2030. That means anything larger than 5mm. EST CORE™ already removes much smaller particles — sand, silt, chemicals. EcoSave is actively applying for Full Trash Capture Certification with the State Water Resources Control Board. In the US alone, there are hundreds of millions of storm drains that need retrofitting. That's a multi-hundred-billion-dollar addressable market. Their near-term goal is 30 major municipality contracts by 2028, each worth $1–5 million.
Phase 2 — Oil Spill Response. Oil companies spend an estimated $25 billion annually just in direct insurance costs for transporting crude. Incidents like Deepwater Horizon and Exxon Valdez demonstrated the catastrophic cost of inadequate first-response technology. EcoSave's vessel-based solution, which recovers usable oil while returning clean water, is positioned in a $150 billion+ annual global market. They've already proven it works under real disaster conditions.
Phase 3 — Industrial Systems. The industrial water and coolant treatment market is a $10 billion+ segment, growing as manufacturers face tighter EPA regulations and look to cut disposal costs. EcoSave's Hydro-Clean units offer on-site treatment with a straightforward ROI — companies save money while staying compliant.
The Team
Benny Gurfinkel, founder and CEO, invested his own money to develop EST CORE™ after working at companies like NASSCO, Solar Turbines Caterpillar, and General Dynamics. He's an engineer who believed in his technology enough to back it personally.
Joe Dolin, co-founder and President, brings over 30 years of sales leadership and is a committed ocean conservationist. Bruce Greenhaus, VP and Legal Counsel, is a patent attorney with 30+ years in IP law, including time as Chief Patent Counsel at Entropic and legal roles at Qualcomm. They've built relationships with key municipal advisors, industry associations, and are now members of the International Spill Control Organisation (ISCO) based in England.
